Abstract
Well fed zooids of several cheilostomes accumulate an excess of diffuse substances within transitory or presistent canal shaped strands of funiculus. The natural conditions of the formation of such tubular strands and the general pattern of funiculus in E. pilosa are described. The ultrastructural study of funicular tissue in E. pilosa shows tht it is formed of a single kind of cells which are characterized by the abundance of their granular reticulum. Lacunae within tubular strands are interstitial and free to be displaced or fuse. They are formed by the confluence of the vacuoles of the funicular cells releasing their contents into the intercellular space.
