Abstract
Males and females of four species of the Jaera albifrons complex as well as several categories of interspecies hybrids were studied by principal components analysis (PCA). A synthetic size factor derived from PCA was used to determine growth gradients which differ notably between sexes. PCA also allowed studying intra- and interpopulation variability and generalized allometry. Size variability is greater in females than in males but their growth directions are more similar. Populations of males are discriminated by the second principal component. The third component separates females and shows elements of conformation common to both sexes of the same species.
