Abstract
    A. romijni which inhabits the muds of the mesopolyhaline lagoons have a benthic larval development which involves partial incubation within the tubes of the female. For the present study larvae hatched and were reared in the laboratoty and were also observed in their natural environment so that all of the developmental stages were available for investigation. Incubation of the trochophore and metatrochophore stages lasts 12 days, recruitment occurs during the erpocheta stage, at 550 mu m and 11 segments, marked by the differentiation of the first pair of gills. Growth and relative location of the gills were described in detail. The observation suggests that the morphogenesis of the anterior region of A. romijni, and the type of larval development, reflect adaptations to the ecological conditions of the habitat of this polychaete.
