Abstract
A pair of secretory organs which lie next to the aperture in the frontal membrane of each zooid are described in the marine bryozoans Membranipora membranacea and M. serrilamella (Anasca, div.: Malacostega) by means of correlated vital staining of the parietal nerves with methylene blue and electron microscopic techniques. Apertural organs are innervated by a few nerve fibers originating from club shaped cells which are stained by methylene blue at the edge of each organ, and joining the stem of the sensory parietal nerve at the level of the frontal insertions of the ventral tentacle sheath ligaments. The above observations are discussed in relation to the possible functional significance of apertural organs in malacostegan Anasca.
