Abstract
Southampton Water and the Solent provide ports and sheltered fishing for a significant number of fishing boats. Whilst many boats will fish outside this area, there are times when the shelter afforded by the Isle of Wight means that the Solent is the only viable fishing location. The Solent oyster fishery is of local importance, providing an income at a time of year when other fisheries are very limited. Throughout the area, catches vary with season and year, and a flexible approach to fishing technique and targeted catch is a requirement of those fishing the Solent, just as it is with all inshore fishermen. In the case of the Solent and Southampton Water, this flexibility has to be extended to accommodate the significant use of the area by shipping, coastal industry and recreation.
