Abstract
Heterotardigrada have a large geograpical and ecological distribution. As their dispersion and diffusion depend on the movement of sea water, the study of their morphology can help us to interpret the meaning of some special feature. Halechiniscidae and Stygarctidae are adapted for passsive transport like planctonic organism e.g. with the increase of the cuticular coat, the lengthening of the appendages, etc. Interstitial and intertidal species, such as Batilipedidae, have adaptations such as toes ending with suckers and a strong stereotaxis, to live and move easily and rapidly within the sand. Their distribution, dispersion and evolution are therefore closely related to the ecology and history of the interstitial environment.
