Abstract
Infaunal micro-distribution within a fine sediment was studied with the aid of a diver-held corer. The abundance of both amphipods and polychaetes decreased rapidly with depth accompanied by a moderate evolution in biomass, Bivalves, however, achieved their maximum biomass at the 2-3 cm level. Such a vertical stratification underlines the importance of the sediment-water interface in benthic ecosystems.
