Abstract
    The aesthetase hairs on the outer ramus of the antennules of Carcinus maenas are innervated by bundles of dendrites. Each bundle arises from a single sensory ganglion at the base of the hair. Dendrites are ensheathed in concentric layers of glial cells in the basal 1/4 of the aesthetase. At the same level they branche into two cilia at a ciliary junction. Their stereociliary organization (9 + 0) is soon lost. Elongated ciliary processes with a gradually diminishing number of microtubules fill the entire lumen of the hair but only a few extend to its apical end. They come in close contact with the aesthetase wall. No pores are found in the wall which is permeable to crystal violet along the distal 3/4 of its length. These features seem well adapted for chemoreception of foreign soluble material.
