Abstract
From 1981 to 1983 the temporal variability of a polychaetous annelid population has been studied, using data from a regular sampling on a soft-bottom coastal station belonging to an E-W transect on the south-Gascony continental shelf. A total number of 93 species and 26 921 animals have been found. There is a considerable degree of seasonal variation in species richness, density, diversity and equitability along the year. The population on the calm summer period is richer than on the unstable winter period. Vary few species have become abundant and dominate the population as they have a spatial or temporal refuge to survive in spite of the environmental alterations. The population evolution seems to be primarily determined by the hydrodynamics characteristics of this station.
