Abstract
This study shows the sensibility of reaction of diatoms to small variations of salinity, due to the discharging of salt water into fresh water of a chalk river. However, a simultaneous organic pollution is making this reaction complicated. The ecology of the 76 taxa found in the Gander, in relation to these two factors (saprobity and salinity) is also precised. Finally, a new organic pollution index (OPI) and a new diatomological one are calculated and give us the level of water quality of the Gander.
