Abstract
The adverse conditions in winter greatly limit the populations of H. ulvae in the Ensenada de Lourizan (NW Spain), but it can dominate in abundance and, less clearly, in biomass. The generation time is 1-2.5 years, depending on the considered area. The species obtains 3-3.5 mm of length when one year old and the best growth is produced during spring and summer, because of a better availability of food. The spawns run from April to December, but mainly during spring. High mortalities occur after the spawning, limiting the permanence of the adult cohort. Ecological differences have been observed between the 4 intertidal stations studied, probably due to nutritional factors.
