Abstract |
The branchial chambers of some brachyuran crabs of the species Liocarcinus depurator, Macropipus tuberculatus, and Goneplax rhomboides have been found to be infested by the polychaete Iphitime cuenoti. Here we provide an account of the intensity and prevalence of the infestation and their relationship to body size, sex, and depth inhabited by the hosts. The frequency of infested animals were 5,5% for L. depurator, and 12,3% for M. tuberculatus. Infestation prevalence increases in both species with host size, and in L. depurator also increases towards deeper habitats. The statistical distribution of infestation intensity fits a contagious distribution for L. depurator and M. tuberculatus |
