Abstract
The Ensenada de Lourizan (NW Spain) is an intertidal bottom polluted by a pulp mill and chlorine-soda industrial complex. The area nearest to the industrial outflow (azoic area) has a high concentration in organic matter and an heterogenous sediment. Another area (polluted area) can be distinguished surrounding the azoic area. It can be subdivided into a zone where only Hydrobia ulvae is present and a zone where some endofaunal species live (Capitella capitata, Scolelepis fuliginosa, Phyllodoce groenlandica, Goniada galaica, and Cerastoderma edule). The central area of the Ensenada is the transition area. It is characterized by a higher species richness, a lower content in organic matter and the absence or reduction of indicator species of pollution.
