Abstract
A pre-sampling relative with a further quantitative ecological study of the large benthic macrofauna (megafauna) especially the exploited mollusks, was realized in the bay of Brest. An original method of coding of the environmental factors defined 17 strata in which particular assemblages of species were differentiated. This coding was obtained by the treatment of the numerous observations of an underwater video camera. The strata are dispatched in 5 superstrata: Estuaries and rias - muddy banks - slopes and channels - gravels of the middle of the bay - rocky areas. Biogenic components are superimposed on the sediments and are determinant for the constitution of original biotypes for epibenthic species. Lithothamnium corralioides beds, shell's accumulations, Crepidula fornicata beds... are favourable supports for the sessile fauna and refuge for the epibenthic vagil species especially their juveniles.
