Abstract
The temporary meiofauna of the Pierre Noire fine sand community from the Bay of Morlaix (Brittany, France), comprising post-larval specimens of macrofaunal species, was studied in 1985-1986 throughout a complete annual cycle with fortnightly sampling. The recruitment period of 23 main species with a bentho-pelagic cycle was deduced from this series of observations. Most of the species showed only one limited recruitment period. Half of the species recruited in summer; 20 had a summer or autumn recruitment. The time lag between the settling of species and the sampling of juveniles on 1 mm sieve mesh varied from one species to another: from no delay to about one year. This time lag was lower than 3 months in a majority of dominant species. Difference between estimated densities of the macrofauna (1 mm sieve mesh) and temporary meiofauna (0.180 or 0.500 mm) varied significantly between the species in relation to the adult size and the length of the meiobenthic phase.
