Abstract
The development of an hourly index has permitted quantification of food searching activity by experimental populations of Nereis diversicolor maintained in a variety of temperature and lighting conditions. Food searching activity stops at a temperature of 8 degree C or below. Its intensity increases between 13 and 23 degree C. The relationships between temperature and intensity of activity suggests that the latter appears in nature as a seasonal rhythm playing a role in small-scale spatial distribution and abundance regulation and the spring resumption of growth in individuals in the populations. Food prospecting behaviour occurs principally in the diurnal phase of the day-night cycle-which, however, is not its synchronizer. Food prospecting would be governed by an endogenous diel rhythm, whose intensity could be related to light. The photokineses of N. diversicolor (individual mobility under illumination) could have an anti-predator significance: shadow detection leading to a retreat of the animal into its burrow, thus avoiding predators.
