Abstract
The 34 nominal species assigned up to now to the paranthurid genus Leptanthura are reviewed. Leptanthura coralliophila n. sp. from a fringing reef at Pulau Babi Besar is described, with discussion of its supposed affinities. The distinguishing features of Leptanthura -related genera are pointed out. The information regarding the distribution, depth range and habitat of Leptanthura -species is summarized. The genus is predominantly distributed in the southern hemisphere, with most species known from the Indo-West Pacific. Most species live in deepwater often with a wide bathymetrical range. Only 16 are known from depths less than 100 m. The inhabited substrate is known for few species and seems to be rather diverse. The new species from Malaysia is described in detail with discussion of its supposed phenetic relationships.
