Abstract
A long-term oceanographic series has been initiated in the coastal, permanently mixed waters of Roscoff (northern Brittany, France) at the entrance of the English Channel. The routine meteorological, physical, chemical and planktological variables are recorded twice a month at high tide, including: rainfall, insolation, winds, seawater temperature and salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, dissolved organic nitrogen and phosphorus, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, phytoplankton pigments, microphytoplankton counts, seston, and zooplankton weight. Data of the 8-year period 1985-92 are presented and briefly discussed. The interest of such series is emphasized, with particular regard to the physical control of primary production, the nitrogen cycle, and possible long-term trends.
