Abstract
    The pumping rates (PR, ml.min super(-1)) of Tapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum are measured with a new apparatus using the "constant level tank principle" of Galstoff. When the dry soft mass (DM, g) ranges between 0. 15 g and I g, the values are given by PR = 122.DM -77.DM super(2) (R super(2) = 0.96) and PR = 124.DM -87.DM super(2) (R super(2) = 0.91) respectively. The maximal fluctuation of the pumping rate is 10 % when the temperature increases by 10 degree C in 150 minutes. By contrast, when the particulate concentration increases from 20 mg.l super(-1) to 500 mg.l super(-1) in 200 minutes, the pumping rate of R. philippinarum is reduced by 90% as soon as the concentration reaches 350 mg-l super(-1)I while the maximal reduction of the pumping rate of T. decussatus at 500 mg.l super(-1) is less than 50%. We go on the assumption that R. philippinarum controls the ingested volume by reducing the pumping rate, while T. decussatus uses the production of pseudofaeces.
