Abstract
Sherkin Island Marine Station in Co Cork, Ireland, has run a rocky shore monitoring programme since 1975. Its scope and longevity now make it internationally noteworthy. The author has succeeded in distilling a huge amount of data and adding background and interpretation. The result is accessible to non-specialists and also offers ecologists invaluable records of fluctuation in species abundance and distribution.
