Abstract
Sixteen ascidians species were collected during the EUMELI cruises in the south of the Cape Verde Basin, in 3 different zones: eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic areas. Three new species are described. Among the 16 species collected, 15 were found in the mesotrophic area with a density of at least 10 individuals m super(-2). In the eutrophic area the species richness is much lower, with only 4 species and a density of 10 individuals m super(-2). Only 2 species with a density of 3.5 individuals m super(-2) were found in the oligotrophic area. The distribution of ascidians differs from that of other zoological groups in which the decrease in number of species and individuals from eutrophic to oligotrophic areas is much more pronounced.
