Abstract
The energy budget of Carcinus maenas in the juvenile phase of life has been studied in terms of calories. Food intake, growth and respiration of a group of crabs, raised in the laboratory were measured under constant conditions. Gross and net growth efficiencies varied with age. On an average 44% of the food consumed was digested, of which 73% was spent for tissue growth (including 9% lost with exuviae) and 25% for energy metabolism.
