Abstract
A succession scheme is presented to explain the succession of scrubs and grassland communities, as well as to explain the position of these communities in the various dune landscape types. From this scheme it is considered that the succession from grassland towards scrub is a natural process, driven by the accumulation of humus and decalcification of the dune-sand. This process is strengthened by (anthropogenic) fixation of grasslands, causing a reduction of natural dynamics. It is argued that the development of scrubs is a problem in Doing's 'K-Iandscape' and 'R-landscape' especially, because of the valuable grasslands in these landscape-units. Nevertheless, also the scrubs developing here (Rhamno- Crataegetum) contribute highly to biodiversity. The described 'ageing of the landscape' can be reversed by re-dynamisation, in which grazing can play an important role. However, it is argued that temporary overgrazing is probably more appropriate than continuous grazing.
