Abstract
    A two-box model of the heat budgets of the eastern English Channel and the Southern Bight of the North Sea was used it to assess the relative importance of various factors contributing to changes in the temperatures of these regions on seasonal and interannual time-scales during the period 1961 to 1976. The model includes advection and diffusion, and employs time-series of monthly mean surface heat fluxes estimated by means of bulk formulae. The results confirmed that changing heat fluxes across the sea surface were the major cause of year-to-year fluctuations in the temperature of this area; variations of temperature outside the area and of the flow through the English Channel were considerably less important. The present paper extends these results by examining the frequency response of the model. Cross-spectra are used to attach time-scales to individual processes and also to reveal the time-lags occurring within the model. As the main concern is with periods of longer than 1 y and the time-series used are comparatively short (16 y) the cross-spectra have been calculated by the method of maximum entropy analysis.
