Abstract |
Among the studied Artemia strains, the smallest cysts and nauplii sizes correspond to the bisexual diploid strain of San Francisco Bay, USA. These sizes become progressively bigger for autochthonous bisexual, di/triploid and tetraploid parthenogenetical strains. This is fesibly bounded to a bigger cellular size and, therefore, to a bigger body size in females, usually displayed by animals and plants with increasing ploidy. Ovoviviparously born nauplii show bigger sizes than the oviparously born ones. This fact possibly concerns with the different development and emergency conditions, namely developing energy expenditure faced by the embryo and the nauplius, inside the cyst or the female uterus, respectively. |
