Abstract
    Available geological and geophysical data from the eastern Hellenic outer margin (between eastern Crete and Rhodes) have been interpreted and analyzed. The data support the hypothesis of a progressive continental collision between the Aegean domain and the African intermediate crust. The resulting geological structures are compared with similar features generated elsewhere in response to crustal shortening. Based on distribution of epicenters, bathymetry (two separate and sublinear troughs) and seismic profiles, the authors propose an evolution of the area in two main episodes: an activation of the margin in the upper Miocene, and a progressive collision starting in the Pliocene.
