Abstract
    Interpretation of seismic profiles across the Gulf of Taranto (Southern Italy) allow the authors to discuss the seismic stratigraphy and to define the shallow geological structure of this complex area of the northern Ionian Sea. The Apulian slope is a down-faulted passive margin covered by irregular unconsolidated Plio-Quaternary sediments. The sedimentary fill rests on presumed discontinuous upper Miocene deposits and on Mesozoic and Cainozoic strata (acoustic basement). The Taranto valley is a thickly sedimented trench-like feature that is the submerged extension of the onshore Bradanic fore-deep. The eastern Calabrian margin, intensively cut by normal faulting, comprises a lower acoustic sequence representing the widespread "allochtonous Apenninic" units. These units overthrust towards the east the unconsolidated Taranto submarine Valley sedimentary fill creating a sinuous NW -- SE-trending thrust-front.
