Abstract |
The South Caribbean chain of Venezuela and also from Central America mountain system (Panama and Costa-Rica) represent two possible routes for the northern extension of the ophiolitic Ecuador-Colombian Andes (northern Andes). These three mountain chains contain basic and ultrabasic rocks from the Mesozoic and Tertiary at the following locations; the Lara nappes of Venezuela, Serrania de Baudo and western Cordillera from the Colombian Andes, the Darien region, the Sona and Azuero peninsulas in Panama, and finally the Nicoya and Santa Elena peninsulas in Costa Rica. This material is partly of oceanic ("ophiolitic" p.p.), origin and its present location results from important tangential tectonic events (interior zone nappes in the South Caribbean chain, accentuate the alpine character of these orogenies situated along the limits of the Tethys domain. |
