Abstract
The harbours of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam and Antwerp (Hamburg-Antwerp Range) hold an outstanding position among the North Sea harbours concerning their size and their variety of functions. While bulk transshipment has been stagnant for the past two decades, container transshipment is growing rapidly. Latest forecasts confirm this trend not only worldwide but also especially within the Hamburg-Antwerp range, Accordingly many projects are under construction or under planning in order to enlarge transshipment capacity and to develop the river accesses.
