Abstract
A recent multichannel seismic line collected during the PRISMED cruise (March 1993) across the western branch of the Mediterranean Ridge (Central Mediterranean) allows interpretation of this feature as a tectono-sedimentary accretionary prism. Seismic processing however clearly demonstrates that most of the tectonic shortening is due to thrusting and piling up of Messinian evaporite sediments. The main decollement level could be located near the basis of Messinian evaporites.
