| Abstract |
A new law entered into force on 1 November 1987 extending the outer limit of the Belgian territorial sea from 3 to 12 nautical miles. With a coastline of only 34 nautical miles, Belgium has much more to gain from a limited territorial zone in front of neighbouring coasts than from an extension of its own territorial sea. Passage of the bill has left many unresolved questions, such as, what is the exact juridical nature of the Belgian territorial sea, is it within the national boundary or not? According to what principle does Belgium intend to delimit its territorial sea? |
