Abstract
The General Assembly of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea at their 46th Statutory Meeting in 1958 passed the following resolution:"That in view of the concern regarding the possibility of overfishing of stocks of Nephrops, further studies of commercial stocks should be made in all countries in which this fishery is important." In 1962 the International Council, at the Special Meeting to Consider Problems in the Exploitation and Regulation of Fisheries for Crustacea, further drew attention to the inadequacy of current knowledge on the biology, population structure, and behaviour of Nephrops. Whilst considerable investigation has been made on Nephrops it remains true that there are serious gaps in our knowledge of this species. It is therefore appropriate at this time to bring together previous work for ease of reference and as a basis for further investigation.Nephrops norvegicus (L.) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Reptantia, Astacura, Nephropsidae-Holthuis, 1950) is well known in European waters. (The generic name Nephrops was first published by Leach in 1814 in the combination Nephrops norvegicus, identified by the type species Cancer norvegicus L. 1758.) It is known by the following common names: Keisarin Krevetti (Finland); Havskrafta, Kejsarhummer (Sweden); Sjekreps, Bokstavhummer, Jomfruhummer, Sandhummer, Trollhummer (Norway); Leturhumar (Iceland); Dybvandshummer, Bogtsavhummer, Jomfruhummer, Gul Hummer (Denmark); Kaisergranat, Buchstabenhummer (Germany); Noorsche Kreeft (Holland); Langoustine, Langoestin (Belgium); Norway Lobster, Dublin Bay Prawn, North Shields Prawn, Beardog (Britain); Langoustine, Cacahouet Arganelle (France); Langostino, Camaron, Cigala, Maganto, Escamadanch (Spain); Lagostim (Portugal); Scampo, Scampolo, Astracio (Italy); Karavida (Greece).
