Abstract
In a previous review in this series (Parrish and Saville, 1965), the authors considered the results of research on population subdivision, general biology, and ecology of the major stocks of herring exploited in the northeast Atlantic, with special reference to the North Sea summer-autumn spawning, and the 'Atlanto-Scandian' winter-spring spawning stocks. In that review the nature of, and the changes in, the commercial fisheries exploiting these stocks, and the main features of their population dynamics were not considered. These are dealt with in this review for the North Sea and Atlanto-Scandian fisheries respectively, with special reference to the results of research undertaken since the second World War.
