Abstract
Although as early as the eighteenth century attention was drawn to changes in the mean sea level over the northern part of the Baltic, only quite recently has the subject received the attention which, as an integral and important branch of marine science, it deserves; the field not only involves several aspects of physical oceanography but also the disciplines of meteorology, astronomy, geology and geodesy. Bibliographies on problems relating to sea level research and covering the literature up to the 1950s have been published by the International Association for Physical Oceanography (1955, 1957a, b), and a bibliography specifically on mean sea level is at present being prepared by the same Association. Although there has recently been an increase of activity in this field much remains to be done: we have little information on a global scale, most papers being restricted to local or regional problems. Further until more extended observations of the required accuracy are available it remains impossible to study the problems from purely theoretical aspects.
