Trends in the evolution of new types of craft and fishing practices in order to secure bigger catches of fish for their expanding populations by some of the countries surrounding the Atlantic Ocean, are here discussed by the author who was Chairman of the 1953 and 1959 F.A.O. Fishing Boat Congresses held in Paris and Miami and in Rome. While recognition is extended to the important work being done by Russia in capitalising on the British creation of the factory ship Fairtry with supplemental developments of supply ships, transport yessels, sea repair workshops, catcher feeders-all necessary for the successful operation of distant water fleets-the author does not overlook the importance of improvements being effected in the design and operation of smaller craft working near water and inshore grounds from which come the valuable supplies of fresh quality fish. Big vessels and fleets may supply the bulk of the world's fishing needs but the contribution of near water and subsistence fishing and the techniques involved in securing those supplies must not be neglected. |
