Ommastrephes bartramii is the most abundant epipelagic omrnastrephid squid in subtropical / warm temperate waters of the South Pacific, Indian and South Atlantic oceans although it remains virtually unexploited. An overview of published fisheries biological information from Japanese, Russian, Australian, Taiwanese and other research studies is provided. These limited studies were based largely on summer jig, driftnet and rnidwater trawl surveys and also on bycatch data from exploratory fishing for tuna and pomfret for the South Pacific Ocean and winter-spring research surveys in the South Atlantic Ocean. The distribution of O. bartramii in relation to oceanographic features in the southern hemisphere as well as in relation to the distributions of other large oceanic ommastrephids is reviewed. Basic characteristics of its life history biology and population structure are also discussed and comparisons are made with published information from the North Pacific Ocean. The potential for further exploitation of southern hemisphere O. bartramii resources by a jig fishery is discussed.
