De totale mondiale productie van visserijproducten blijft gestaag toenemen. Met 5% van dit totaal is de Europese Unie (EU-25), na China, de grootste producent ter wereld. Ofschoon de 10 nieuwe lidstaten de productie van de EU-15 met 10% hebben opgevoerd, is de totale productie van de EU toch licht gedaald in vergelijking met voorgaande jaren. Binnen de EU blijven Denemarken en Spanje qua volume de grootste producenten.
