Abstract
This publication provides the first set of identification keys for red, green and brown seaweeds for California north of Pt. Conception, since the publication in 1976 of "Marine Algae of California" by Isabella A. Abbott and George J. Hollenberg. Its coverage extends northward to include Oregon, an area previously treated by Gabrielson et al. in "Keys to the Benthic Marine Algae and Seagrasses of British Columbia, Southeast Alaska, Washington and Oregon". Generic keys are illustrated with line drawings of taxa that exemplify notable features. In the species sections, references to descriptions and illustrations are provided for each taxon. While focusing on morphological characters, the keys also utilize habitat and geographic data, which have been updated. A glossary is included at the end of the keys. Names of all currently recognized seaweeds and seagrasses in the publication area are updated as of November 2004, including new genera and species as well as introduced species reported since 1976. About 15% of the brown, 25% of the red and 33% of the green seaweeds have had their binomials changed in the past 28 years; previously used names are indicated. The numerous unresolved species questions are highlighted in footnotes. The following new combinations or new names are proposed: Colaconema coccineum (K. M. Drew) P. W. Gabrielson comb. nov., Colaconema desmarestiae (Kylin) P. W. Gabrielson comb. nov., Colaconema garbaryi P. W. Gabrielson nom. nov., Colaconema gymnogongri (K. M. Drew) P. W. Gabrielson comb. nov., Colaconema subimmersum (Setchell et N. L. Gardner) P. W. Gabrielson comb. nov. and Pneophyllum nicholsii (Setchell et L. R. Mason) P.C. Silva et P. W. Gabrielson comb. nov.
