Abstract
    Hyalella maya n. sp. from a sinkhole (cenote) in Quintana Roo, Mexico, is described herein, based on morphological characters. It is the third species recorded in Mexico and the second species of Hyalella found in the Aktun-Ha sinkhole. It can be distinguished from its closest species, Hyalella azteca from Veracruz, by the shape of the palp of maxilla 1, the number of setae in the posterior margin of the basis, the relative palm length and the truncate process of gnathopod 2 in males, the number of setae in the lobe of the basis of pereopod 7, and the shape and setation of the telson. Those characters have been found to be useful for species distinction in the complex by González and Watling (2002). The main differences between Hyalella cenotensis and Hyalella maya n. sp. are: the presence of eyes, the number of articles in the flagellum in antennae 1 and 2, the relative length of antennae to the total body length, the relative length of the rami in uropod 3 to the peduncle length, and the number of setae in the telson.
