Abstract |
As part of an interdisciplinary research programme on the circulation and turnover of pollutants in the North Sea, benthic organisms and demersal fish were analyzed for a number of heavy metals. The hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus, was the only species that could be obtained in numbers sufficient for metal analysis at most locations in the North and Irish Seas. The abdominal parts of this crab were analysed by mercury, cadmium, copper, zinc, silver, lead, iron and manganese. The data obtained show that regions with similar concentrations of metal can be distinguished. There are differences among the various metals with respect to their patterns of regional distribution. Concentrations are high at locations influenced directly by the known riverine and other landbased sources. However, high concentrations of mercury, cadmium and lead are also measured in extended areas north of the Dogger Bank and in the northernmost and northwestern North Sea. |
