Abstract
The bivalve molluscs collected in the Laptev Sea during the expeditions ARK IX/4 and Transdrift 1 as a Russian-German cooperation were studied. All the samples taken with a bottom dredge or an Agassiz-trawl from 43 stations covering the whole area were examined. The material contained 80094 specimens belonging to 62 species of bivalves, 4 species were recorded for the first time in the Laptev Sea area. The present study focuses on an intensive taxonomical investigation. By applying original papers and revisions of types to check the determinations, the material is discussed with respect to the most recent special publications about the certain groups. The criteria for separation of species proposed in literature were applied to the specimens from the Laptev Sea and checked for their validity in the investigated region. Special attention was paid to little known or overlooked Russian literature. Most of the species were sketched to complete the investigations of shell morphology and anatomy. The high variability of certain species and the taxonomical problems caused thereby were analyzed and discussed. In cases of problematical determination of juvenile stages growth series were depicted, e.g. species of the genera Musculus, Yoldiella, Astarte. The anatomy ofTindaria derjugini, Katadesmia kolthoffi, most of the species of the genus Yoldiella and the species of the families Thyasiridae and Verticordiidae were illustrated and described, in the cases of Yoldiella frami, Y. tamara and Policordia uschakovi for the first time.In addition the known records of bivalves in the Laptev Sea were listed. Due to the circumpolar distribution of most of the species involved, the present study has a relevance beyond the area of investigation and can be considered to be a summary of the current state of the taxonomical and nomenclatorical discussions of Arctic bivalves.
