Abstract
Features of the feeding behaviour of C. helgolandicus and C. glacialis during algal concentrations characteristic of phytoplanktonic blooms were examined experimentally. On the basis of experimental observations it was assumed that the feeding behaviour of the copepods in the experiments differs little from their behaviour in nature and that the destruction of algae under lab conditions is hardly a consequence of the surplus of food. At low concentration of food the crustaceans consumed all the cells completely; when the concentration of cells was increased the number of cells partially eaten by the crustaceans also increased. The relationship between wholly and partially eaten cells changes noticeably only within the limit of certain concentrations. It seems that there is a decrease in the feeding activity of the animals during high food concentrations.
