Abstract
The seventh phase of the North Sea research programme (2006-2010) is included in the programme "Science for a Sustainable Development " SSD". This structure ensures interactions with other research domains such as energy, transport and mobility, agri-food, climate, biodiversity, and terrestrial ecosystems lying at the basis of a sustainable development policy.

Given the special role of the North Sea for our country’s cultural, social, and economic well-being and to give the adequate scientific support to sustainable management and exploitation of the North Sea special attention to North Sea research is further given within the SSD programme.

The programme offers possibilities for the internationalisation of Belgian research via among others the ERA-NET initiative. The Belgian Science Policy is involved in several ERA-Nets. This opens the way to developing and implementing joint transnational activities such as joint calls, project clustering, etc.

The Belgian Science Policy participated in the first joint-call of the AMPERA ERA-NET.

The total research budget for North Sea research within the SSD will amount to ± 8,3 MEURO.
