Abstract
Experimental surveys reveal that plankton populations are not uniformly distributed in space but display horizontal structures often referred to as "patchiness". Such structures are presumably associated with heterogeneities of the physical environment and the possible relationships between physical and biological processes in the sea have been extensively investigated in the recent years. The equation of active dispersion is briefly discussed here in an attempt to clarify some of the processes which may affect the spatial distribution and the dynamics of plankton populations.
