20 years support by Flanders for sustainable ocean projects worldwide

Added on 2018-06-05
Since 1998, Flanders has supported UNESCO's activities in the field of science in various disciplines; like some important projects relating to the ocean and coastal areas by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). During the FUST OCEAN event in the week of 14 to 17 May, this collaboration was put in the spotlight. For those who could not attend and still want to get an overview of the UNESCO projects sponsored by Flanders on the sustainable use of ocean and coasts, please visit the FUST website. The event was organized with the support of VLIZ.

During the week of May 14-17, representatives from partner countries on all continents explained the results of five of the projects. There was also an exhibition in which the FUST-funded projects and all partners exhibited their international activities.

New contacts were made during the conference and in the margins of it. Also many Flemish marine scientists were present with interest in cooperation with the south. They were given an overview of the financing options to stimulate partnership and collaboration. Later this year, the scientific cooperation between Flanders and UNESCO within the context of the FUST trust fund will be evaluated by the Flemish government.

All presentations from the program, the posters of the exhibition, and photos of the event are accessible via the FUST website:
