VLIZ and Peruvian counterpart IMARPE committed to more cooperation

Added on 2019-08-26
On 23 August 2019, the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding. In this way the new partners express the desire to develop closer scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange. For example, on the exchanging of expertise and data, or mutual access to each other's research infrastructures such as research vessels and instruments.

Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE), a scientific-technological agency of the Peruvian government, is dedicated to research and knowledge building of the ocean and its resources by studying the chemical, physical and biological oceanographic processes in an ecosystem based approach. Since 2008, IMARPE and VLIZ collaborate within the broader context of the Flanders UNESCO Science Trust Funds (FUST) in projects such as SPINCAM and Ocean Teacher Global Academy. But with the current MoU the institutions want to strive for more specific institutional cooperation, for example in the field of exchanging expertise and data, and mutual access to research infrastructures such as research vessels and instruments.

On 23 August 2019, Carl Decaluwé, Colin Janssen and Jan Mees signed the Memorandum of Understanding with IMARPE for VLIZ, in the presence of Gonzalo Gutierrez Reinel, Ambassador of Peru.

Earlier this year, the Peruvian Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) signed an co-operation agreement with its Flemish counterpart, the Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research (ILVO). This new MoU between IMARPE and VLIZ now also covers marine ecological and fishery research between the two countries.
