North Sea Award

Every year VLIZ awards a prize at the VLIZ Marine Science Day to promote innovative fundamental or applied research. This research has to focus on the study of the structure or processes of the North Sea, with special attention to the shallow coastal areas and estuaries of the Southern Bight and the English Channel.

The VLIZ North Sea Award is presented annually to a researcher or research group active and residing in a country by the North Sea.

The prize amounts to 1 000 EUR and is indivisible. The prize aims to reward recent and original scientific work that contributes to the innovative fundamental and applied research on the structure, operation and sustainable management of the ecosystem of the North Sea, with special attention to the shallow coastal areas and estuaries of the Southern Bight and the English Channel. The contribution’s level is post-graduate or post-doctoral, and refers to a maximum of three years' research since obtaining the doctorate.

Meanwhile, the deadline for participation and registration for the VLIZ North Sea Award 2019 has expired. Keep an eye on the VLIZ news channels in the autumn of 2020 for the announcement of the new edition.

The VLIZ Nort Sea Award 2019 is rewarded to Brand Evelien of the VUB (Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering) for her PhD thesis “Intertidal beach morphodynamics of a macro-tidal sandy coast (Belgium)”.
