VLIZ recruits: Data Manager - Oceanographer

Our offer

  • A contract of 2 years (with possible prolongation) and a salary scale according to qualifications and experience, following the salary scales of the Flemish Government.

Your tasks

  • You represent the VLIZ Data Centre as data manager in international projects (e.g. Blue Cloud, Mission Atlantic, Jerico S3).
    • You coordinate dedicated tasks in the project and make sure that the necessary project deliverables are met.
    • You attend (inter)national project meetings.
    • You take care of external project reporting.
  • You perform data management tasks
    • You implement new and optimize existing data flows from observations and sensors to the VLIZ data systems and repositories.
    • You develop and/or enhance different oceanographic data exchange formats and quality control procedures.
    • You help transfer our data from the VLIZ systems to external partners and users.

Your profile

  • You have an MSc and working experience or PhD degree with a scientific background (marine sciences, oceanography, bio-informatics,…) or similar by experience.
  • You are familiar with international data sharing initiatives in the field of marine science.
  • You have experience with data management and international data and metadata standards. Familiarity with marine data formats and standards is a plus.
  • Practical experience with databases and SQL queries is a plus.
  • You have experience with programming (R, Python,...).
  • Experience with FAIR data principles and open science is a plus.
  • You have a positive attitude, are eager to learn and have excellent organizational skills.
  • You have excellent English verbal and writing skills.
  • You have good social and communication skills and can work both individually and in team.
  • You are willing to work in an international context and are willing to travel for work occasionally.
