VLIZ Members' Day 2021

On Friday 17 September 2021, VLIZ is organizing a tour of the institute's new-build sites especially for its members, because 2022 will be the year of relocation for VLIZ. We are exchanging the InnovOcean site on Wandelaarkaai for the InnovOcean Campus on Jacobsenstraat. The move, combined with the expansion of the Marine Station Ostend, is necessary to meet the intensive and rapid growth of the institute, which also significantly increases the research capacity. These new-build projects on the Oostende Oosteroever will give marine research in Flanders a boost.

During the VLIZ members' day, we welcome members to the InnovOcean site, the VLIZ office spaces on Wandelaarkaai. With the move in prospect, it will most likely be the last time we can receive the members in the current building. General director Jan Mees zooms in on recent developments within the institute. A shuttle bus then takes the members to the InnovOcean Campus under construction (Jacobsenstraat), where an explanation follows about the details of the new construction site. We continue the tour by bus to the Marine Station Ostend (Slipwaykaai) where the expansion works of this site are discussed together with the brand new seawater pipeline.

The 2-hour tour takes place in groups of 50 people. Please indicate the desired starting time when registering. Registration is necessary, and this before Friday September 10, 2021.

Start: 4.30 pm, 5 pm, 5.30 pm, 6 pm or 6.30 pm

VLIZ Members' Day 2020

Due to the impact of covid-19 on our society, we were looking for a digital alternative to the planned VLIZ members day. On Friday 18 September, VLIZ employees, marine scientists and VLIZ members met in the virtual world. During the online VLIZ members day, VLIZ General Director Jan Mees spoke to the members and zoomed in on the 20th anniversary of VLIZ, Deputy Director Tina Mertens gave a bird's-eye view of the construction of the new VLIZ building and the developments of the Marine Station Ostend, and several BMRI laureates briefly explained the research they carried out thanks to the Brilliant Marine Research Idea grants.

VLIZ Members' Day 2019

On Friday 21 June 2019, VLIZ organized a unique event for its members in the Marine Station Ostend. The focus of this edition was on the Marine Robotics Centre and the recent developments at VLIZ. During five information sessions VLIZ collaegues talked about:

VLIZ Members' Day 2017

With the title 'Shellfish Inside Out' VLIZ welcomed its members at the Marine Station Ostend. This second edition was centered around shellfish. Marine professionals, VLIZ staff and SeaWatchers, unravelled all the secrets of the shells on our North Sea beaches. Participants could choose two workshops from a wide range of activities:

  • Seek shells on the beach under the guidance of SeaWatchers
  • Learn how to identify shells with the help of marine professionals
  • Design beach flowers with the explanation of shells as payment
  • VLIZ employees show you their work on shellfish
  • How sustainable is the consumption of shellfish?
  • Cooking with shellfish

VLIZ Members’ Day 2016

All members were welcomed at the renewed Marine Station Ostend (MSO) at the Slipwaykaai near the site Halve Maan for a cosy and informative midsummer activity. At 19:00 the guided tours started along the Eastern Bank, an area where nature, heritage, fisheries and other maritime activities, together with residential estate are looking for a common modus vivendi. The area also harbours an interesting history of Flanders’ marine science.  Expert guides (Dutch speaking) shed more light on all these aspects, including the secrets of the military heritage (Fort Napoleon and bunkers of both World wars) present in the coastal dunes. Finally, a demo of the beach observation network 'SeaWatch-B' took place, one of the philanthropy projects set up by VLIZ through the financial support of members fees and donations. We closed off with a reception at the Marine Station Ostend.
