On Friday 27 November we welcome all scientists from Flanders and surroundings on the 10th edition of the VLIZ Young Marine Scientists' Day. For once not in Bruges, but because of our 10th anniversary celebration in Oostende (Thermae Palace). By means of an XL poster session and 30 selected pitching presentations this special edition (*) of the Young Scientists' Day we want to attract the attention to the large diversity in Belgian marine science.
In July 2009 we launched a call to submit abstracts for a poster presentation participating in the poster competition. We received a 150 entries that are now compiled into a Book of Abstracts. This publication and the poster session will succeed in demonstrating the diversity, quality and relevance of the coastal and marine research in Belgium!
Thirty abstracts were chosen out of the submissions. The selected authors are challenged to present their work in a short (max. 5 minutes!) 'pitching' presentation. Special focus should go to the way of communicating about marine science results and its social relevance towards a broad public of scientists, policy makers, funding agencies and journalists. The speakers will be evaluated by a professional jury of science communicators and journalists.
Afterwards everyone will be given the opportunity to examine and judge the 150 posters and meet with the scientists behind the presented science during a one and a half hour lasting poster session and competition.
We conclude this Young Scientists' Day with the presentation of the VLIZ scientific awards: the North Sea Award and the Thesis Awards. Hoping to see you then!PROGRAMME
